We had a great and busy day. I had a FULL day planned with every subject being taught, but our math measurement project went double the time I had planned on. However, it was sooooooo much amazing learning that I just kept on going. Kids had a tough challenge today. They didn't know they were making a snowman, but had to create many of the parts using a ruler and a compass. The compass and the concept of circles and radius was brand new to us, but rulers were taught before the break. It was pretty fun to see them bring measurement to life. It is one thing to measure lines on a worksheet, but to actually use it to build something is way super cool. Kids were given the measurements and they had to figure out how to create the piece. So, for example they had to make two strips of paper that were 18 inches long by 2 inches wide. After the initial panic was over, they did great. However, some discovered when we put them all together that they may need a bit more practice before doing another project alone. :0) I was very impressed on their ability to use a compass as well! Enjoy the final results below in the slideshow! We will continue the project next week with a writing activity.

Today we also started our SE regional tour. Kids traveled, via CD and Youtube, to Florida today. They went to the Everglades National Park and to Cape Canaveral to see a shuttle launch. I asked the kids to brainstorm in their groups about how a shuttle comes back to Earth for a landing. We watched a youtube to show us. Ask your kiddo to share with you what they learned. They should tell you that they land just like a airplane, but use a parachute to slow them down to a stop. Pretty cool learning. If they can tell you, write the word SHUTTLE in the planner for $10 tomorrow. Kids also learned to identify information that was note worthy. We took notes using vocab words, dates in history, and factual information. Kids had a quiz at the end of the day. Those that took down the class notes did GREAT. Those that chose not to for whatever reason, did not. Urg. Life long skill there. Kids were only allowed to use their notes on the quiz, not their books. We will do it again on Monday as our tour continues.
We spent all of our green money today. Kids were able to buy many reward coupons. Yay! Now, everyone has the $100 start up money in their wallets. New fresh starts are refreshing!
Tonight's homework is: Georgia HR. Many kids used their homework pass on this one. So, if they say they did, they probably did. If not, they need to read it and answer the questions on the back. Georgia is one of our SE regional states. It is due tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow is Fallen Rock Friday. Please encourage your child to wear their new Fallen Rock shirt if they ordered one. It was fun to hear the reactions of opening them, at least those that didn't already know. :0)
Remember, if you are able to volunteer tomorrow from 10-10:30 for math one on one help I would LOVE to have you! Thanks!
Well, that about covers our Monday/Thursday! Have a wonderful evening. Tomorrow's Friday all ready!
