Hello there. Happy weekend to you! We woke up to snow, but now the sun is shine, shine, shining! Time to get out there and go sledding!
Speaking of sledding…if your child goes today, remind them to mark it down as their exercise time. Kids need to record the amount of time they exercise today and tomorrow in their planner for our Big Sky State Kids Team. We are the Buff Believers!!! Kids need to log down their exercise time and how many servings of fruits and vegetables they eat each day. Exercise can be anything, as long as they are moving. Our class goal is to do at least an hour a day. A serving is the size of a fist. It can also be done in drinks such as fruit fusions or V8 drinks. They just need to read the can to see how many servings they are drinking. Our class goal is to have 1-2 servings of fruit and 1-3 servings of vegetables. . Their log sheets must remain at school, so they can just log what they do in their Friday planner and then transfer it to their log in the morning as part of their Ducks In a Row.
Read-A-Thon sheets came home this weekend. Kids were told all about on Friday at lunch by Mrs. Meier. Kids need to start to get their pledges. Next Friday, they can bring them back in and see if they qualify for a fun prize. The more pledges they get, the more prizes they will be eligible for. Please read the green information sheet for more details. All money earned will be used to finish out our stationary computer lab, our library chrome book lab, and if there is money left over start a new lab and purchase nonfiction books for Lead 21 Inquiry for all grade levels. We sure could NOT do the things we do at Arrowhead without your support. I am consistently amazed at the level of support from parents at Arrowhead. And that is a positive amazed that I am feeling! :0) The read-a-thin lasts until February 28th.
This morning, Emma and I went over to meet our new student Adelaide at her home in Ironwood. She is going to fit perfectly into our class. She, her parents, and 6 siblings (plus one on the way), just moved here from Texas. Dad is a surgeon at the hospital here. They are such a nice family, and full of so much energy. It was fun just sitting and visiting. I know that the class will just swoop her right under their wings and make sure that Arrowhead becomes her new home away from home. Welcome to Arrowhead Adelaide! We are soooooo happy to have you!
Nicolas was our star of the week this past week. He brought in his fun stuff from Mexico, his cuddly bear Cuddles, super cool spy glasses, and his gigantic blanket that he got for Christmas. Snuggly warm! He also shared with us his statue of dogs along with a picture of his new little puppy he just got before Christmas. So cute!!!! Thank you so much for sharing with us Nicolas!
As far as academics go this week we will be learning…
Math: Adding mixed numbers, reducing fractions using a GCF, and testing out on Prime and Composite numbers.
Lead 21: The Midwest States Unit. We will be working whole group this week on finding the main idea and supporting details in the text. We will be back in small groups the following week.
Spelling: Words with a /j/ and /s/ sound.
Alternate Spelling: New program this week. Kids will be given a different type of test on Wednesday. They will not have the words in advance. The words are every day words used often in the English language. The test is a story or passage with a bunch of blanks in it. I will read it aloud, filling in the blanks as we go. Kids need to listen, follow along, and fill in the correct spellings of the words they hear. Because it is in context of a text, they will also have to make sure to watch their sentence structure. If the blank is at the beginning of the sentence, then it must be capitalized. We will grade them that day together discussing as we go. There are many homophones so I want to teach them as we correct. Doing this ensures that they come home Wednesday night with the words they missed to study. They will then have until Friday to work on those words. If they miss less than two on Wednesday's test, they will not need to retake the test on Friday. They will earn the 100% in the grade book. On Friday, they will take the exact same test again. They may only miss two or less to pass. More than that will be considered a 70%/C in the grade book. Kids were told this on Friday and all their questions were answered. They were then given the opportunity to take on this challenge or to stick with the book words. It sounds confusing, but it really isn't when they do it. It is by far more challenging than the book words however because of the listening aspect. To be an alternate speller, kids must have passed their last book spelling test with a 100%. Those that did not, my become an alternate speller if they pass a book test in the future with a 100%.
Social Studies: Montana History. We are WAYYYYYYY behind and need to catch up. We will also finish up our Civil Right's Boards.
Language: Subject and Object Pronouns and Action, Helping, and Linking verbs. We will quiz for mastery on Friday.
CC Meeting: Having new kids in our class, Empathy, and Black History Month. We will be listening to some fun music by all different African American musicians. We will do this while we practice our handshakes. There will be a special word for each song. Whenever they hear that word, they will stop and handshake a friend. Rusty will also be returning this week. With all the Civil Right's lessons, we have not been watching him lately. So, it will be good to have him back in the classroom via the web as well.
Don't forget this Tuesday night is our Civil Right's showcase. We will begin at 6:30 in the library. Please bring your child with you. If other siblings have another place to go that would be great, but if they don't I would rather you come anyway! It is always nice to just have mom or dad or both all to ourselves sometimes.P Prepare to be entertained! :0)
It has come to my attention that there were some errors on the Valentine's Day list. So, I have added Adelaide to it and made some other corrections. A new copy will come home this week in the Tuesday folder.
Golden Apple award nominations will also come home in the Tuesday folder. This is always an awkward thing to blog about. This award comes from you, the community, to a teacher, specialist, or principal that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in your opinion. There are so many amazing teachers in our very own building. If you asked anyone of them if they go beyond the call of duty, each and every one of them, including myself, would say no. We just love kids so much and coming to work is a passion for us. It is not a job, but rather an honor to have such an amazing gift each and every day. We all get so much recognition daily from our students, and as for me, I adore each and every note of kindness that you write/text to me. That is all any of us need really isn't it? To be noticed and to be acknowledged. I feel this way all ready at Arrowhead. How lucky am I to work at such a wonderful place, with wonderful friends, parents, and kiddos? Pretty darn lucky if you ask me! So thank you for making me feel like a Golden Apple Award teacher every single day! :0)
Some kids are itching to buy into the Valentine's Day Party. So, I will be collecting their fake $300 on Monday. No worries though. Kids have until February 12th to earn more money. I am guessing most kids will buy in tomorrow though.
Fitness Club with Mr. Pertuit starts up this Tuesday after school. Does your child have their permission form turned in? Get ready to work out people! :0)
The below zero weather is returning this week. Please make sure kids dress warm. Remember, we go out for recess if it is above zero with the windchill. Otherwise, we will stay inside.
Does anyone have any pictures from the Reef that I could post on the blog? Please email them to me if you do: ericksont@billingsschools.org. I can't believe I forgot my camera in the car. :0(
Lastly, I would like Haylee to picture me doing my little good luck cheer for her again. She is in a cheer competition this weekend. Hoping she does well and that they all get home safely. I would also like to send out a cheer for Ty and Chase in the lego competition. I saw them practicing one day. Pretty hi-tech stuff! I am hoping they scoot, knock over, and chase all the right things with there robots. Go boys go! Safe travels to them and their families as well. :0)
Well, I think that is about it for this week. Have a great Sunday!
